Everglades Glamping

Everglades camping on a catamaran

I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some incredible fishing trips, but this one might take the cake. Spoiler alert, it wasn’t because the fishing itself was outstanding.

With technology tugging at our attention every single second of the day, sometimes I wonder if we’ll soon forget what it’s like to “just be”. Be there for the moment. Focus on what’s in front of you. Share it with only the people physically around you. Is the idea of this truly fading away? For so long I’ve believed that to be the case, but on this recent trip to the Everglades I was swiftly reminded that there are in fact still those opportunities to disconnect and enjoy the view, but it truly comes down to one very simple thing: cellular service.

Last month we pushed off from land in Islamorada, FL, aboard a 50-foot power catamaran with two poling skiffs in tow, and pointed the bow towards the Everglades. We cruised across Florida Bay at a slow 8 knots as the six of us sat around the boat’s bridge and cracked open cold beers. About half way across the bay we lost cell service and I knew everything was about to change. The next two days were full of life amongst the boys. We never stopped talking. We never stopped laughing. We were there, just being. And dammit was it fun.

I look for the opportunity to lose cell service often, and would highly recommend it to anyone who needs to be reminded to slow down. Because I can promise you the world will not be slowing down otherwise.

Cheers to the pursuit,
